Bound to happen - Covid

Well it looks like after two years, after vaccination and booster shots, I caught Covid from my husband who caught it at work. I've been sick for a little over a week and am in the congestion phase of this virus with a slight cough. My husband is still coughing three weeks into this but otherwise feels fine. Here's hoping that the vaccination protects against long-covid symptoms and any other negative health impacts down the road.
In the meantime, I'm working half time from home and socially isolating. My husband on the other hand has no sick leave at work, so he's saying fuck it and showing up anyways. He has PTO and he refuses to use his PTO for sick leave. I'm sure he's not the only person out there making this calculation, he's also thinking it's on people to be vaccinated and it's not his problem if they aren't. He's kind of ruthless...and I'm not going to argue with him on this one because honestly this is where the government needed to step in and not leave it up to individuals to figure out.
In his defense, he did tell his friends that I'm still sick with Covid and he was sick the week before me, strangely his friends are still okay with meeting him for coffee and hanging out. Must be a guy thing...My buddy nev_longbottom and I haven't seen each other in 3 weeks! To be fair, she hasn't met a cold she hasn't caught, so I commend her for taking precautions.
Back to complaining about the government of the United States. The government provided no enforced mask mandates in public places, no vaccine mandates, didn't share the Pfizer/Moderna vaccine with the rest of the world (locked up with a patent), and generally did very little besides providing free testing, vaccines and boosters, it's not shocking that Omicron got a foothold and is spreading so quickly amongst everyone. This virus had to be tackled on on all fronts. I think they should have closed bars and restaurants and kept schools opened with mask mandates and updated air circulation systems.
My husband's office job required all workers to work at the office because none of the field guys could work from home and it wouldn't have been fair to let people work from home. This could have been fixed if the government made a mandate that all jobs that can be done from home had to be done from home for a period of time until vaccination rates reached a certain threshold. Or something to that effect.
I can't really blame my husband for bringing this home because the government left everyone's health up to private companies and their policies and the individual. Well not all individuals are going to make the choice to stay home when they are sick and the Covid home test says you're negative. I went to a testing center when my cold didn't match all of my husband's symptoms. My home test was negative when I had the worst symptoms, and positive at the testing center when the worst of my symptoms went away.
Basically don't trust the home test, go to a testing center if you have cold symptoms.
I read that it's possible to be re-infected with Omicron because it's that contagious. Not really reassuring. As soon as there is a booster for Omicron I'm taking it.

Date: 2022-01-16 12:21 am (UTC)I found it baffling that mask mandates were lifted early in 2021 when they were such an easy way of keeping infections down while the public got (oh so slowly) vaccinated.
I don't know if people are getting re-infected with Omicron but they are definitely getting reinfected even if they had a different strain before.
