Ebook Library User Poll

This is a poll for anyone that's used or has an interest in using the Ebook Library Archive. I'm trying to get an idea of what I can do to improve the site and know which formats to focus on more.

I read ebooks on my iPhone. (I wasn't sure whether you meant iPhone to be included under iPod/touch but I thought better too much info than too little. ;-) )

I use the Stanza app.

Favorite format is hard for me--absolute favorite is "PDF custom-made to my preferences." Most of the time, I prefer ePubs; for fanfic, I often use RTFs (again, set to my preferences, but that's easier than tweaking for PDF creation). I don't like line-between-paragraph setups; I prefer indented first lines. And for RTF, I use a standard font size of 15 or 16 pts, which shows up pretty small on the PRS-505.

I read on my iPhone, used to be on my iPod touch. And since I use Stanza I prefer ePub files (although anything that can be nicely converted by Calibre works as well). As for fandom, mostly SGA, though some HP, NCIS, etc.

I have a Pocketbook 360, which totally rocks. Format's not important because it'll read just about anything, but mostly I've been using HTML/RTF/EPUB.

I do like my HanLin! I mostly read mobi and rtf. Mobi works well, and rtf is so useful - no matter the size of the original font it is readable on the reader, unlike doc or pdf - which I've only just discovered, to my chagrin. I used to up the font size on rtfs assuming I'd need to to be able to read it well. However, large fonts are just ugly and annoying (you have to change the page more often), especially when it turns out that 9pt verdana is totally readable without magnification! My only experience with ePub is the one I have on my reader that just will not open.

RTF works differently I hear on other devices.

Typical, eh? Consistency is often lacking across the IT industry, unfortunately.

Yes, it does support embedded images. I often remove them, however, as it sometimes takes issue with images ... it may be dependent on image size, or it may be dependent on the HanLin's "mood" ;) - sometimes it takes extra time to load a page with images. Not always, though.

The Pocketbook always has the option to display page numbers in a little status bar running across the bottom of the screen. I generally use FBReader to render files, because it's far more customizable than Adobe Reader (which does additionally place the page number at the top right of the screen).

I gather the page number thing with Adobe isn't something you can get rid of short of switching to FBReader. It's just how the Adobe software was coded, if I understand this thread correctly.

File type isn't much of an issue, because FBReader renders them all pretty consistently, and I've got the settings tweaked just the way I like them. I do have to resort to using Adobe for PDF though, so they're still usable, just not as pretty.

Aha, I finally got around to taking some screencaps. I know there was interest.

Here are the direct links to a bunch of different file types, all opened using FB Reader. IIRC, for all of these, I have indents set and added extra space between paragraphs.

PRC
RTF (There's no need to edit the file prior to loading it on the device, because fonts/spacing/indents and all that can be adjusted on the fly.)
EPUB
HTML saved from AO3 (Story body)
HTML saved from Google docs

It was surprisingly easy to take the screencaps once I remembered how. Let me know if you want me to try any other formats, or adjust any of the settings. (Jon laughs at me because I tend to leave the text rather large.)

I still am device-less. I was thinking of getting an iPad, but am annoyed by the fact that it won't play flash. That's fucking retarded. IDK. Might wait until that all gets sorted out. I'm excited to read epub format!

A friend who works for Apple pointed out that gmail will open PDF, Doc, and RTF, and you could read those formats via that route on the iPad. Perhaps Safari could even save them as web files, which is something I used to do in the past to save fics. I'm hesitant about the iPad, though, because I'm worried Apple is being all control freak. No flash is bad enough, but if I can't install Firefox instead of Safari, I'll smash the damn tablet. I'm going to go have a look at it when the campus computer store gets them. It's a lot of money for no flash and no Mozilla. I know it's not a laptop, but still.

ePub does seem to be the emerging standard for eBooks, and I see that Gutenberg is now providing ePub, which is exciting.
